How to Read a Mopar Part Number: Revision Suffixes, Supersession and Fitment

Published

A Mopar part number has two components: a numeric base and a two-letter revision suffix. The base identifies the part family and its application within the Stellantis catalogue. The suffix marks the production release. Most buyers quote the base number and treat the suffix as a formality. In practice, the suffix determines whether the number on the shelf matches the number in the service manual, and whether the quoted number is still active or has been superseded.

What AA, AB, and AC mean in production terms

Stellantis issues every new part at the AA suffix. The first engineering update increments it to AB; the second to AC. The update can be a material change, a different supplier, or a correction to a specification. The base number stays constant; only the suffix changes. The JL Wrangler front brake pad kit 68409860AC is the second revision of that part. The AB revision preceded it. Both AB and AC cover the same fitment: all JL trims, standard front brakes, 2018-2026. AC is the current shelf item. When you quote 68409860AB, the cross-check against the live Stellantis catalogue maps it to AC, and AC is what ships. Fitment does not change between revisions in this case; the revision is transparent at the counter.

Supersession: when the base number itself retires

Supersession is not a revision suffix increment. A superseded number means the base has been retired entirely and replaced by a new number. The spark plug SP149125AF supersedes SP149125AE: the same ignition application, an updated formulation, and a completely new number. SP149125AE no longer appears as an active Stellantis part number. Quoting SP149125AE from a pre-update service manual will not match the live catalogue entry. We cross-check every quoted number. Where a number has been superseded, we confirm the current replacement and verify it covers your vehicle before reserving anything.

Long model-year ranges and revision depth

Parts that span many years of production accumulate revision history. The 5.7L HEMI engine oil filter 4884899AC covers the JK Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Dodge Charger, Challenger, Durango, and RAM 1500 across 2008-2026. That is an 18-year application span with multiple model refreshes within it. The AC suffix is current across that entire group. A JK-era service manual for a 2009 HEMI application might reference an earlier suffix. The base is the same; the shelf holds AC. For parts whose revision is tied to a production date band within a model year rather than a clean year boundary, send the 17-digit VIN alongside the part number. The VIN carries the plant code and production sequence that identify exactly which revision band applies to your vehicle.

When the base number changes by engine family

Not every difference between Mopar applications is a revision increment. Some applications use entirely different base numbers because the component itself differs. The JK Wrangler 3.6L V6 engine air filter (2007-2018) is 68257791AB. The JL Wrangler and Gladiator (2018-on) use 68257030AA. These are not revisions of each other. The JL introduced a different filter housing geometry, so the base number changed. The same divide applies to oil filters: the 3.6L Pentastar family takes the kit 68191349AC; 5.7L HEMI applications take 4884899AC. Same model names, different engines, different part numbers. The iridium spark plug SP143877AB covers RAM 1500, Charger, Challenger, Durango, and the Grand Cherokee on the 5.7L HEMI from 2012-2026. The engine code in VIN position 8 resolves the engine family before the order is placed.

Cross-checking a part number before you order

Send the Mopar part number with the full suffix and your 17-digit VIN to +971 4 330 4022 on WhatsApp. We confirm whether the number is current or superseded, identify the correct revision if applicable, and verify shelf availability at Ras Al Khor before anything is reserved. Shelf-stock parts confirmed before midday are dispatched the same day within Dubai. Orders to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, and the Northern Emirates are delivered the next working day. For the fitment reference tables and the full stocked part families, see the Mopar parts page.
