Jeep Wrangler JK vs JL: Parts Guide for UAE Owners

Published

The Jeep Wrangler has carried two generation codes since 2007: JK (2007–2018) and JL (2018-onwards). At the model-year boundary in 2018, both codes were in production simultaneously for part of the year. This overlap means the year alone does not identify the generation — and the generation determines almost every hardware part on the vehicle. This guide covers the key mechanical differences, the parts that do not interchange, and how to confirm which generation your VIN carries.

Engine Changes: 3.8L to 3.6L Within the JK, Then the JL

The JK generation arrived in 2007 with a 3.8-litre V6 engine. In the 2012 model year, Jeep replaced it with the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, which continued through to the end of JK production in 2018. A JK owner who does not know the build year of their engine could be looking at two different engine families under the same generation name. Spark plugs, oil filters, ignition coils, and valve cover gaskets differ between the 3.8L and 3.6L JK engines.

The JL (2018 onwards) launched with the 3.6-litre Pentastar as the standard engine for GCC-market builds through the 2020 model year. From 2021, the 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four entered GCC order guides. The oil filter specification, spark plug type, serpentine belt routing, and engine air filter are all engine-specific on the JL. When a UAE JL owner sends a model year without specifying the engine, the VIN resolves it — position 8 of the 17 digits is the engine code.

Axle Codes: Dana 30 and Dana 44 Across Trims

The front axle specification on the Wrangler is trim-dependent, and the trim is encoded in the VIN. On the JK, non-Rubicon trims (Sport, Sahara) carry the Dana 30 front axle. The JK Rubicon carries the Dana 44 front and rear. On the JL, the same split applies: Sahara runs Dana 30 front (and Dana 35 rear on earlier builds), while the Rubicon runs Dana 44 front and rear. The axle determines the seal dimensions, U-joint specifications, and wheel bearing family. A Dana 30 axle seal will not fit a Dana 44 housing.

This matters for a UAE buyer because most UAE-market Wranglers are Sahara or Rubicon trims — the Sport is less common. When a US parts catalogue lists an axle seal without specifying the Dana code, it is usually the Dana 30 dimension (the more common trim worldwide). A UAE Rubicon owner ordering from that reference will receive the wrong-dimension seal. The VIN axle code produces the correct specification every time.

Body Material: Steel JK, Aluminium JL

The JK body panels are steel. The JL introduced aluminium construction for the doors, hood, and fenders. This change affects repair and replacement procedures: aluminium body panels require different welding techniques, different filler products, and different fastener considerations than steel. From a service parts perspective, a door hinge, latch, or body panel part number for the JK will not carry across to the JL — the mounting geometry and material are different. Photographs of damaged body panels are useful alongside the VIN when requesting body-related parts.

Brake Parts: Different Rotors, Different Part Numbers

Front and rear brake hardware is generation-specific between JK and JL. The Mopar front rotor for the JK is part number 52060147AA, confirmed for the JK (2007–2018) and also used across related platforms sharing the same front axle/brake package. The JL front rotor is a different part entirely: 68273502AB for the standard brake package. These two numbers are not interchangeable — the JL rotor has a different diameter and hat height than the JK rotor.

Rear rotor diameters also differ between JK and JL. Ordering a JK rear rotor for a JL — or vice versa — produces a part that does not fit without immediately obvious visible evidence; the hat height or rotor diameter mismatch only becomes apparent when the brake is partially assembled. This is one of the most common fitment errors on Wrangler brake work. Always confirm the generation before ordering any brake hardware.

  • JK front rotor (Mopar 52060147AA): 2007–2018, confirms for standard JK brake package
  • JL front rotor (Mopar 68273502AB): 2018–2026, standard front brake package
  • JL front brake pad kit (Mopar 68409860AC): 2018–2026, all trims, standard front
  • JL rear brake pad kit (Mopar 68385238AC): 2018–2025, all trims, standard rear
  • JK engine air filter (Mopar 68257791AB): 2007–2018, 3.6L V6 24V VVT
  • JL engine air filter (Mopar 68257030AA): 2018–2026, also fits Gladiator JT

Why the Year Alone Misleads at the 2018 Boundary

Jeep produced both JK and JL Wranglers during the 2018 model year. A JK Wrangler with a 2018 model year is not the same as a JL Wrangler with a 2018 model year. No suspension component, brake hardware set, or engine service part crosses over between them. A buyer who orders parts for "2018 Wrangler" from a catalogue that does not confirm the generation code is, in effect, guessing. The guess is wrong half the time for any 2018 Wrangler order.

The VIN resolves this immediately. The model year character (position 10) is the same letter for both a 2018 JK and a 2018 JL because the MY code is calendar-based. What distinguishes them is the Vehicle Descriptor section — positions 4 to 8 — where the generation code, engine, and body configuration are encoded. Decoding a 2018 Wrangler VIN against the Stellantis build record identifies the generation, engine, axle, and trim before any part is pulled from the shelf. This is the correct starting point for any Wrangler parts enquiry in the UAE.

Order Wrangler Parts from Ras Al Khor with VIN Confirmation

Mecanum holds Mopar shelf stock for both Wrangler JK and JL at KAW Warehouse 1, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area 2, Dubai. JL stock includes front and rear brake pads and rotors, front control arm assemblies, Dana 44 axle seals for Rubicon trims, track bar, sway bar links, and engine service filters. JK brake and engine service parts are also on the shelf. Send the 17-digit VIN to +971 4 330 4022 on WhatsApp with the model year and trim; the counter confirms the generation, axle code, and engine before pulling from the shelf. See the Wrangler parts page for the full Mopar fitment reference table, or submit your VIN via the parts request form. For Lincoln Navigator or Hummer H2/H3 parts enquiries, the same VIN process applies — see the Lincoln parts page and Hummer parts page for sourcing details.
